An article from CNN was brought to my attention today. Titled, ‘The Demise of Guys’: How video games and porn are ruining a generation.

Here’s a small little excerpt:

Is the overuse of video games and pervasiveness of online porn causing the demise of guys?

Increasingly, researchers say yes, as young men become hooked on arousal, sacrificing their schoolwork and relationships in the pursuit of getting a tech-based buzz.

So, I cannot help but ask… why is ‘Psychologist Dr. Philip Zimbardo attacking the porn industry and games?
I will not endorse adult entertainment. However, I will speak out on the behalf of gaming.

Many times before,  senators or different activists here in the United States have campaigned to have games: banned, outlawed, production stopped, etc etc – the list goes on. I often see articles such as Dr. Zimbardo’s and do not waste my time reading. However, with a blatant ignorant title such as “…ruining a generation”? Really? Seriously, this has to stop.  Especially this:

Norwegian mass murder suspect Anders Behring Breivik reported during his trial that he prepared his mind and body for his marksman-focused shooting of 77 people by playing “World of Warcraft” for a year and then “Call of Duty” for 16 hours a day.

So slaying raid bosses in WoW and getting a solid KDR in CoD will make you a mass murderer. Under what ground? What were they trying to spin in that trial? Innocent people died – so lets blame gaming for today’s youth being corrupted. I assume it’s safe to say the Dr’s article is slanted. As is this one. You fight fire with fire.
If you want to read a good article, read this. The Wall Street Journal went as far to say:

A three-year study of 491 middle school students found that the more children played computer games the higher their scores on a standardized test of creativity—regardless of race, gender, or the kind of game played. The researchers ranked students on a widely used measure called the Torrance Test of Creativity, which involves such tasks as drawing an “interesting and exciting” picture from a curved shape on a sheet of paper, giving the picture a title, and then writing a story about it. The results were ranked by seven researchers for originality, length, and complexity on a standardized three-point scale for each factor, along with detailed questionnaires.

I’m tired of seeing the endless posts about ‘gaming is game, gaming harms kittens, gaming is evil’.

It goes as far as Judge David Shaw wanted to recommend the International Trade Commission to ban the Xbox 360. [source]

We’ve witnessed it all before. If you want to read Dr. Zimbardo’s full article, click here. Gaming has come a long way. From the Odyssey to the Ps3 – with groundbreaking technology and pioneers – the world we know of video games will stay for a long time.

Lets just pull up a seat, sit back, and relax around a game of Soul Calibur.
Be sure to let me know how you feel.

This post is purely opinion. Galvion’s post does not reflect the views of everyone at Link Dead Gaming.

First, I would like to say that I hope you had an enjoyable 3 day weekend, which included Memorial Day, in which if you are so inclined to do so, and I hope you are, you took a moment and gave thanks to those men and women who have put their own safety on the line to ensure that we stay safe, and free, and able to do things like enjoy Video Games. After taking that moment if you did not to recognize their sacrifice, we have some great news for you.

It was announced by ArenaNet today that the next Guild Wars 2 Beta event will be happening starting June 8th at 3pm EST and continuing until June 11th at 3am [source]. They went on to say how much the help given by the community has meant to them, and how happy they are to be getting close and closer to the release of the game. Mass Effect 3 gets a voice

We all know at this point that there will be a Mass Effect 3 extended cut DLC, free for anyone playing the game, and set to help players finally close Mass Effect like it should be, but we have not know any of the particulars till now. It is now known that the voice actors for Admiral Hackett (Lance Henriksen), EDI (Tricia Helfer), and Kaiden (Raphael Sbrage) have signed on to help us end the saga. We still have a bit longer to wait, but it is slated to come out this summer.

Here is our hope that the rest of the cast will sign on as well, to give the Commander Shepard the send away he deserves. Keep your eyes peeled here as we will tell you more as it develops.

Diablo 3‘s woes continue
The five character classes of Diablo III. L-R ...

The five character classes of Diablo III. L-R Wizard, witch doctor, demon hunter, barbarian and monk.

After all of the trouble that Diablo 3 has faced since its release, you would think by now that the great Gaming Powers that Be would cut it a break and allow it to rest a bit. Sadly that is not in the stars, so to speak.  It has been reported today at that there are rumors flying of a new problem for those players enjoy Diablo 3. It appears that hackers are stealing accounts and taking items and gold, which is pretty much stock in trade, but what makes this story bizarre is that Blizzard Entertainment uses an authenticator to protect against these types of attacks.

What we are hearing is that even players who have and use the authenticator religiously are also being hacked, and wiped clean, which would be an indicator that the authenticators are doing very little indeed to stop the cyber thieves.  At this point the only warning we can give players is to log in daily, check your account, and if you notice anything out-of-place, notify Blizzard immediately so they can get right on fixing your account for you. Also, change your password. The setup that I have always used is as follows. Make sure your password has at least one capital letter (exmpl: H T P), at least one lower case letter, at least one number, and at least one special symbol (exmpl % * @) which will make it much harder for cyber criminals to figure out your information.
